Why you should replace your air filter this winter

Air Quality

We stress preventative maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment all the time, but this doesn’t only mean annual tune-ups – it also refers to checking your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system working smoothly and improve your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it on your own! Now is the ideal time to inspect your filter, as the cooler weather comes to an end and the warmer weather is on the horizon. There are a lot of benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Increasing the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to cause a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Extra dirt that is built up on your filter can force your whole system to work harder than it should to keep your home cool. Not only will it impact the performance of your system, but it can increase your energy costs and cause your system to overheat.

Improving indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it flows into your home. The older a filter gets, the less efficient it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your home, particularly if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With spring around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you don’t want them circulating in your home. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and remain healthy during allergy season.

Examine your system or current air filter provider for suggestions on how frequently you should be changing your filter. For most filters through 1st Choice Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the best time to exchange your air filter?
