Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Lake Forest just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area regularly to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have built up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Lake Forest will most likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At 1st Choice Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. in Lake Forest, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
